Children are naturally curious about the world. They actively explore the environment and the world around them through play. Play-based learning is an essential part of a child’s development. Play provides opportunities to integrate all areas of learning.
Since children arrive at school with different backgrounds and experiences and at different stages of development, Kindergarten programs provide a variety of learning opportunities and experiences which respect individual needs and differences.
Learning opportunities in Kindergarten are carefully planned to:
- promote each child’s intellectual, social, emotional, physical and creative development;
- build upon the child’s past experiences and the learning he/she has already acquired;
- promote the attainment of the learning expectations;
- encourage the child to participate in community life beyond the school.
It has long been acknowledged that there is a strong link between play and learning for young children, especially in the areas of problem-solving, literacy and social skills.
Children have opportunities to participate in activities that support their own interests. As well, educators guide children during play and extend and support their learning in various play centres throughout the day.
WRDSB Kindergarten program provides children with educational activities appropriate for young learners, taking into account their physical, intellectual, social and emotional needs.
